“7129 Is No longer made…” Poster

A Poster promoting Autumn Le’ Brannon’s Thesis show at CalArts.

It is an attempt to reflect the essence of the show, a breaking down of a personal facade created at such a young age in fear of ruining a “perfect image” to a person who she cares deeply about, her nan.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
In this series, I display video documentation of my grandmother’s hands knitting articles of clothing for me.
This first image is juxtaposed with a cell phone video addressed to my grandmother, taken of myself at a time when I thought I might die. I also display a self-portrait in which I am wearing everything she has knitted for me – in the same color. The portrait and video are accompanied by three small portraits of the perfected girl I use to be, when I first came to live with her.
I also display collected documents addressed to friends instructing them to hide the evidence of an adult me:
a woman that has had sex before marriage, and has things to hide from a caregiver generations apart. The desire to protect her and her love of me has created unnecessary pressures that have existed too long. I have explored these pressures in hopes of beginning to rid myself of them, and finally relieving myself of these expectations.

Wise Cub: “Some Honesty” EP Posters

A collaborative project with music group Wise Cub.

I was asked to create the visual identity of Wise Cub, starting off with posters that were personal expressions of meanings and lyrics to specific songs from their “Some Honesty” EP. One poster was released each week to showcase a specific song during their residency at the Room 5 Lounge in February.

CalArts Practicum Workshop with Nicolas Bourquin of onlab

During this workshop, the class was split into groups of two, and we were prompted to create a daily magazine that would be relative to current events, ranging from different subjects of culture, sports, local, world, business, and others. We were to asked to sketch, design, and print the entirety of the magazine within three hours. The schedule was as follows:

9AM: Editorial meeting
10AM: Present sketches and direction
11:30AM: Spreads to production group
NOON:Printed and distributed

All spreads were done in collaboration with Elizabeth Alexander.

For the first issue, we designed an article about the SOPA protests on the web and visually represented various websites’ reactions to the SOPA/PIPA acts and how it would affect the spread of culture across the world.

For the second issue, we talked about Phillips’ choice to bring their factories back to the Netherlands from China. This decision will be more efficient for the company, and create additional jobs for the Dutch.

We were in charge of the production and cover for the third issue of newsjungle, which incorporated two major themes: Chinese New Year and local facebook status updates among our peers. We shot photographs of models wearing traditional Dragon-head costumes worn in parades during Chinese New Year celebrations.

For the fourth and last issue, our article reflects on the football player, Tim Tebow, whom is outwardly religious on and off the football field and whether or not his actions are all for show or are an actual reflection of his beliefs.

THE INVISIBLE MINORITY

The Invisible Minority is an exploration of Filipino-Americans in Los Angeles.

Filipinos have not set up base in one specific area to create a sort of “Filipino-town” but instead have created tiny cultural hubs, or “Little Manilas” in various areas of the county. The project intends to explore the sporadic bases of establishment of Filipinos in the county and their ease of immersion into these different areas.

While I intended to cover areas of the county, I focused on one specific area for the case study that was closest to me: Eagle Rock.

“Hong Kong” T-Shirt Documentation

Ania’s project for class; we were each given a photo as a jumping off point to design a type-only t-shirt and try to translate the photograph onto the shirt.

I chose a picture of Hong Kong, which is a densely populated area full of various culture. With the lack of ability to grow outward, they instead build upward, creating various towers that are in constant competition against each other. I equated this phenomenon to the Tower of Babel in the Bible, which was created to connect the earth to the Heavens.

“New Single Family Home” Posters

Poster designed for Vivian Lin’s Graduate thesis show “New Single Family Home,” a study of growing up in what is considered a “McMansion” home located in the San Gabriel Valley.

It is the telling of the Chinese immigrants who came to the area to express their realization of the American Dream by the building of their dream home. It features an abstraction of the original blueprints of the original home.

The front features general information on the state in addition to how the island was formed. The back features a more focused area of study of immigration of many different cultures and ethnicities and how that influenced the changes in food, language, and the decline of the native Hawaiian tongue.

A redesign of a book I read in 7th grade; the assignment dealt with creating and translating visual metaphors with various imagery to convey those meanings.

Some of the visual metaphors include a disconnect from culture and ethnicity, becoming lost and confused by the constant bombardment of information, and the acceptance of one’s identity.
